RHFI HISTORY

From the Start

The RESOURCE–Handumanan Foundation, Inc. (RHFI) is a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to empowering underprivileged families through housing, health care, education, and livelihood programs. Its mission is deeply rooted in the values of the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR), emphasizing compassion, service, and faith as pathways to human dignity and community transformation.

OUR HISTORY

The Vision Begins

The foundation’s story started in 1991, when Fr. Antonio Palacios, OAR, of the University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos (UNO-R), proposed a housing project for displaced families from Barangay 39, Bacolod City. His compassion for the poor inspired a movement that would soon change countless lives.

The First Milestones

In 1994, with support from Manos Unidas and the Autonomous Government of Navarra, Spain, the Recoletos Quadruplex Housing Project and St. Ezekiel Moreno Health Center were inaugurated in Barangay Handumanan. The two-hectare site was donated by the Araneta-Villasor family, and the event was graced by national and international partners — marking RHFI’s first major success in community development.

Becoming a Foundation

On January 29, 2002, under Rev. Fr. Julius M. Marcos, OAR, the initiative was officially registered as the RESOURCE–Handumanan Foundation, Inc. (RHFI). This transition from a community project to a legal foundation ensured continuity, structure, and accountability in serving its growing number of beneficiaries.

Strengthening Partnerships and Programs

Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Lauro Larlar, OAR, and Rev. Fr. Emilio Larlar, OAR, RHFI deepened its collaboration with UNO-R and other partners. New systems were introduced — including an improved housing amortization scheme and a reliable water system supported by the Cojuangco family. Partnerships with the Siervas de Maria Ministers to the Sick also expanded health and wellness programs.

Nurturing Faith and Community

During the tenure of Rev. Fr. Dacanay, OAR, and Rev. Fr. Dionisio Selma, OAR, RHFI strengthened its focus on spiritual renewal. Programs such as household visitations, rosary prayers, and home blessings reinforced the community’s faith and unity.

Continuing the Mission

With Rev. Fr. Ronel P. Gealon, OAR, RHFI continued to grow through livelihood projects, financial empowerment, and spiritual guidance. Initiatives like the “Pantry ni San Jose” and the collaboration with ARCORES helped many families complete their housing amortizations — a major milestone in community self-reliance.

Today, RHFI remains steadfast in its mission to build a faith-driven, self-reliant, and dignified community, embodying the enduring compassion and service of the Augustinian Recollects.
